Akshara Haasan wants to stay away from Camera | Kamal Hassan younger daughter wants to be away from Camera -- It was a homecoming of sorts for Akshara Haasan, the youngest daughter of Kamal Haasan and Sarika, when she visited Chennai recently after almost a year.

After settling down in Mumbai to pursue a career in filmmaking, Akshara made a fleeting visit to Chennai to perform in a dance show for the city’s famous dance couple, Gautham and Kokila.

“I left Chennai nine months ago and man, it’s been so long! I flew down to participate in this dance show for Koki, who has taught me dance since I was eight,” says Akshara.

So, is she missing Chennai already? “Of course I am!” she asserts, “I didn’t realise how much I missed Chennai until I came back for this performance. Earlier, I thought it was just the food. But now, I realise I’ve missed this place on the whole – from the city roads and landmarks to beaches and people.”

She adds, “It’s not just the place; I miss talking in Tamil as well. Before shifting to Mumbai, I would converse mostly in English. But now that I hardly have anyone to talk to in Tamil, I just keep scouting for opportunities to speak the language.”

While Akshara’s sister Shruti is busy acting in movies and composing music, it is dance and filmmaking that keep Akshara going. In fact, the young girl is all set to participate in the Latin Ball Room competitive dance to be held in the London Olympics in 2012.

“I’ve always been passionate about dance. I’ve learnt all forms except the ballet. Sadly, I woke up to it late in the day. However, my favourite is the hip hop. I’ve also learnt kuchipudi and bharathanatyam but I don’t perform them on stage. Those are just for my satisfaction,” she says.

On the film front, Akshara is assisting Bollywood director Rahul Dholakia in his film Society. Interestingly, the film stars her mother Sarika in an interesting role. “I haven’t done any course in filmmaking. I prefer learning everything on the job. In fact, I’ve already made three ad films with a couple of my friends,” she smiles.

So, does she take any tips from her parents or sisters? “I just talk to amma and appa whenever I feel low. My amma gives me tips often. I also ask appa whenever he has the time,” she says.

The girl insists she and her sister Shruti are close buddies. “We are thick as thieves, not literally though! We share our experiences and laugh about trivial things,” she smiles.

Akshara is clear that her stint in the world of cinema will always be behind the camera. “I don’t want to take up acting. I would like to stay behind the camera and make wonderful films. There are two things I can’t live without – dance and cinema.”

So, will she ask her dad to act in her film? “Directing my dad is definitely on the cards, but not now. He’s in a different league now and I can’t afford to flounder. I can’t call appa for a role and then mess it up!”
