M. Bhanu Kiran, the main suspect in Suri’s killing, was previously held in March 2008 for for illegal possession of guns. He is said to have been the main conduit for Suri when he was in jail.
The car, AP28DF 1248, was registered in the name of one Ratna Kumar of Attapur in the city, thought to be an aide of Suri.
Suri had secured remission after he completed his sentence for the Jubilee Hills blast case. He was on bail in the Paritala Ravindra murder case which is being investigated by the CBI, the only case naming him currently.
Suri hailed from a factionist family with a long history of rivalry with Paritala Ravi’s family. The faction feud triggered several bloody attacks over the years resulting in almost three dozen deaths, including those of Suri's family.
The violent saga inspired veteran film director Ramgopal Varma to direct Rakta Charitra, and later a sequel to it, Rakta Charitra-II.


Bullets were pumped into his head, stomach and shoulder and though Suri was rushed to a hospital at Jubilee Hills at around 6 pm. Suri was not breathing when he was brought to the hospital and doctors said they revived his breathing but he died of cardiac arrest at 7.50 pm, closing one of the bloodiest chapters in the factional history of Rayalaseema.
“The motive could be internal rivalry between Suri and Bhanu over a property dispute in Vijayawada, or it could be revenge killing by the associates of Paritala Ravi,” said a police source.
The city police commissioner, Mr A.K. Khan, said the incident took place when Suri was returning after meeting his advocate, Achyuth Reddy. “We are not ruling out any angles,” he said. According to the version given to the police by Suri’s driver-cum-associate, Madhumohan Reddy alias Madhu, he left his apartment in Madhapur around 3.30 pm and went to Sanatnagar.
“I heard the sound of firing,” he told the police. “Bhanu raised alarm and said there was an attack and got down from the car and fled.” It was Madhu who brought Suri to the hospital in an unconscious state. But police said the driver was giving different versions during interrogation.
“There was no scope of shooting from outside,” said a police officer. “The killers were inside the car but the conspirators may be someone else. The car AC was on and there was no damage to the vehicle. The killers used a revolver but no weapon was found.”
Before the incident Suri called up his cousin, Padma, in Navodaya Colony and told her that he was visiting her. He was also supposed to meet a film producer at Banjara Hills after visiting his cousin. Police said Suri was involved in several property dealings in AP and Karnataka. Both West Zone Police and Task Force sleuths are investigating the case. Banjara Hills police booked cases of murder and Arms Act. Tension mounted in Anantapur district after the news of the murder spread. “Things are under control,” said the Anantapur superintendent of police, Mr Manis Kumar Sinha.
