Twenty20 (T20) World Cup 2009 is going to start 5 June 2009.It officially begins today at 5.30 with England vs Netherlands in the opening match.
Of the 12 teams, 9 are established test nations. The others — Scotland, Ireland and the Netherlands, are qualifiers.The teams are divided initially into four groups of three, each team playing the others once. The top two progress. Pakistan is the third team placed in the Group.Besides, there are nine other teams participating in the world tournament. Defending champions India, Bangladesh and Ireland are placed in Group A. South Africa, New Zealand and Scotland are placed in Group D.Semi-finals would be played on June 18 and June 19, while final would be held at Lords on June 21. Apart from Lords, matches would be played at Trent Bridge, Taunton and Oval.
Background
The first ICC Twenty20 World Cup was held in South Africa between September 11 and September 24, 2007.
Twelve teams, including 10 test playing nations, had participated in the 13-day-long competition.
